HEALTH campaigners in the far north are calling for answers after learning of cuts in the number of beds in the maternity unit of Caithness General. Caithness Health Action Team fears the top floor Henderson unit has been "set up to fail", by NHS Highland and is furious that the halving of the beds, from six to three, has been made "on the sky".

A WARNING has been issued about an algal bloom which has appeared at Loch Watten. People are being advised to avoid swallowing or touching the algal scum and the water around it and that adults ,children and animals should stay away from it.

VODAFONE has blamed crossing lines for misinforming customers in Thurso, that poor reception was down to a golden eagle nesting on its tranmission mast in the town. The company now believes the bird of prey was an osprey but that there is nothing now to stop its engineers accessing the site in a bid to resolve recent problems with its service.

EXCELLENT weather ensured that a record crowd turned out for the popular Marymas Fair at Ham Park, Dunnet.

SCRABSTER welcomed over 2,300 passengers on Monday as the port experienced its largest influx of visitors on the final day of its cruise ship season. The Oriana and Amadea sailed into the county's largest harbour to drop off 2,331 visitors from all over the world.

RETAINING and developing existing services at Caithness General is one of the priorities set out by Highland councillors in Caithness.j They have promised to work hard to "protect and enhance" the facilities, in a mission statement called A Vision for Caithness, Land of the Norse Yarls.

Wick Academy manager Gordon Connelly sympathised with supporters at Harmsworth Park after another poor performance made it three games without a win at home for the Scorries. He said: "We need to improve at the moment and I feel for the fans watching. This used to be a ground where we didn't drop many, or indeed any, points.
