Tractor driver's plight attracts Wick sheriff's sympathy

A 61-year-old crofter, who fell foul of the law when he used his tractor without licence and insurance, in order to visit his doctor, was admonished by a sympathetic sheriff at the weekend.

Sam Connell admitted the offences at Wick Sheriff Court. His licence was revoked, previously, by the DVLA on health grounds. He is no longer fit to run his croft at Blackness, Mid Clyth, and leases the land to a neighbour..

The tractor was spotted by police outside the GP surgery Lybster, on January 28.

Fiscal Ross Carvel said that Connell admitted he owned the tractor and had been driving it on the A99 without licence and insurance.

Mr Carvel went on: "He told the officers that he had used the tractor because he had no other means of getting to the surgery."

Connell who said he couldn't make alternative arrangements as his telephone was out of action, told Sheriff Andrew Berry that he attended at Caithness General Hospital for dialysis three times a week and added> "It keeps me alive as my kidneys are on the way out."

Sheriff Andrew Berry, who commented that the accused appeared to have "enough worries to be going on with" admonished him, commenting he couldn't disqualify him from driving, as he no longer held a licence.
