A MOTORIST was killed when his car crashed into an uninhabited cottage on the outskirts of Keiss early yesterday. The car left the A99 at the junction with the side road to the beach and ploughed through a field before hitting a bank and is believed to have flipped over with the roof hitting the front of the house which is being renovated.


WICK Sheriff Court will received the royal seal of approval today when the Duke of Rothesay visits, to mark 150 years of justice being dispensed from the historic building. Sheriff Andrew Berry will greet the Duke at his first public engagement during his week-long stay at the Castle of Mey where he was due to arrived yesterday.


WORK to repair the Killimster Moss road is due to get underway soon and is expected to be completed in the next financial year. The decision, by Highland Council, was welcomed by community councillors yesterday but they expressed concern about alternative traffic arrangements when the work is being undertaken.


WICK Gala organisers are delighted at the number of people turning out to take part in the week's events with a record number of entries in the car treasure hunt. Chairwoman Andrea Merchant was overwhelmed to learn 84 cars had taken part in the event which is massively up on the 60 participants of lat year and a record for the gala.


A RESIDENT of a Caithness care home has taken part in the interview process for NHS Highland employees as part of a programme aiming to transform the way the board's homes are run. Under the My Home Life initiative 85-year-old David Bruce was asked to be the residents' representative and apply his considerable life skills to help select and appoint members of staff at the 18-resident Pulteney House in Wick.


WICK RBLS Pipe Band is celebrating another successful visit to the town by the musicians' partner band, the Highland Pipes and Drums of Waldsee. The German band travelled to the county hoping to renew old friendships and enjoyed a welcome meal in the Pipe Band hall last Thursday.


WICK writer Tom Allan will launch his new novel in the town next week - 22 years after his first one was published. Scotland's Last Viking: A Saga of Orkney and Caithness will be unveiled at an event which is being held in the Pulteney Centre on Tuesday.


SCRABSTER'S proximity to the west of Shetland oil and gas fields gives it a clear advantage over other ports according to harbour trust manager Sandy Mackie. He believes that the port -celebrating its 175 anniversary this year - can look forward to several decades of work from west of Shetland as well as having an increasing involvement in renewable energy and maintaining its traditional role as a fishing port and ferry hub.
