AN SSPCA inspector has spoken of the great effort locals put into trying to save a dolphin stranded on Dunnet beach. Senior inspector, Audrey Gunn, got the call on Monday morning that an Atlantic white-sided dolphin had been found at the beauty spot. Locals and visitors to the area turned out to help in any way they could to try to save the life of the animal.
CONCERNS about the safety of power lines running through Thrumster have been lessened but not fully addressed following a special meeting of a community group. Residents had raised fears in the wake of damage caused to one of the lines, which run across the front and back gardens and driveways of the houses on Finlayson Place and Stewart Crescent.
THE chairman of the Dounreay Stakeholder Group has been accused of "not pushing to get the questions answered" about plans to move consignments of highly enriched uranium from the nuclear site to the US.
MORE than £165,000 has been awarded to 10 groups following the latest round of grants handed out by Caithness and North Sutherland Fund. It is the largest single amount awarded by the fund since its inception in 2011.
A PROJECT has been launched in Wick to make a record and archive of people's memories, stories and feelings, particularly from the past but also the present, ensuring they are not lost for good. Wick Voice with Wick Society at its helm has a team of volunteers already working to collect oral histories from the people of the town and the rest of east Caithness.
SCOTTISH Government ministers are to be pressed on the need for a key improvement to the Caithness-Inverness rail line. Members of Friends of the Far North Line are to write to Scottish transport minister Humza Yousaf and infrastructure minister Fergus Ewing calling for the urgent need to install a loop on the rail track at Lentran just outside Inverness to improve journey times and prevent train delays.
THURSO Gala organisers are delighted with the success of their new even for the week, Thurso Pointless. Tuesday night's new effort proved a great hit with all ages and left organisers impressed with the knowledge of local youngsters.
