HIGHLAND COUNCIL has staged a dramatic U-turn on cuts it proposed to make in the extra classroom support provided for primary and secondary pupils with special needs. The move prompted a major backlash in the far north with one community representative earlier this week condemning it as an attack on the vulnerable.

A FUNFAIR which has been coming to Caithness for more than 70 years will be back at its familiar Millbank base in Thurso next week despite having problems there last summer. The ground was "a bloody mess" after adverse weather in 2015 and there had been suggestions the show should be catered for at an alternative site.

SPENDING £8 million to upgrade Wick John O Groats airport to handle nuclear shipments was yesterday described as a gross misue of public money. Tor Justad, the chairman of Highlands Against Nuclear Transport, also accused the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority of "riding roughshod over the local community"

A CAITHNESS neuroscientist is to carry out research which could result in new ways to treat motor neurone disease. Dr Chris Henstridge, who is from Thurso but works and lives in Edinburgh, will lead a team which was granted £213,000, almost half of a total package of £450,000 awarded to three projects by the MND Scotland charity.
