I've been hearing a bird near by with a very distinct call, but I have no clue what it is... it's like those whistles, with the stick inside that you push in (higher notes) or pull out (lower notes).

Here's my attempt...Unknown Bird Call (http://uk.geocities.com/w33burd/Unknown_Bird.wav)

Any ideas who this could be?

Sorry wee bird, can't help you on that one.
Have you heard the football fan bird?? I'll swear it's singing 'tweet tweet tweet Merinio' !! I think it is a chaffinch.

It has to be one of these two, its a Peewit (lapwing or Green Plover it has many names but Peewit is the name after its sound) or its a Curlew.

Lapwing mms://85.133.25.234/020/020SHOW1CDR1375U0BD01C01.wma its kind of long, you need to listen to it all to hear the different sounds. You need to copy and paste that link from mms into your browser.

Curlew - this one is a bit short http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/jblincow/sound/curlew1c.wav

I think its actually a lapwing your hearing though.

Here is a better recording of its calls, these are display calls when it is showing off, this time of year they are building nests and so on, they are dependent on newly plowed fields to a certain degreee as this is where they will build their nests.

I think out of all the resident birds in Caithness the Lapwing is my favorite, love to watch its flight and here its calls.

Thanks for replying Jeemag and MB!

Nope, it's definately not a shochad(sp) as we used to call them, or a curlew, although we do hear both of them close by. I suspect this bird is residing in the one of the tree's nearby, and his call is four repititions of the "whoop- whoop" I recorded. I'll try and get a recording on my mobile if I can. It's really bugging me - he's a very cheerful chappy and sings for long enough!:D

yeah I tried opening your sound file but it was not there. Wouldn't mind a listen. Also record Mr Burd doing an impression just for the laugh too [lol] although byt the sounds of the whoop whoop the bird is probably a Celtic fan.
