Hi I just enquired about a private rental and the landlord said he was living in a Pentland housing house as the one he owned was too small for his family . Surly this cant be allowed if you own a property you can still get a housing association property . Is there anyone on here who knows if this is allowed or is he just cheating the system .

Would you be happy with a family of 6 living in a studio flat?

I do not see any problem as long as they are paying rent and the full rent of house rented out declared to HMRC, thats how it works usually.

How would you like to move to a new area (London?) - unable to sell your house due to whatever reason, wouldn't you expect to be able to rent social housing or private rental until you could afford what you need?

Don't think it is right to own a house but Live in a housing association one a mile away

So you would rather see overcrowding?
It's not like there is a housing shortage in the area is it?

I think this is an interesting question being raised by Sgitheanach. What I would say though is that things are not always black or white and can be far more complicated than they might seem at first. So it can be easy to jump to the wrong conclusions. Perhaps it would be wise to get the landlord's story first and then take it from there?

If you are looking to rent a house in Caithness then I would suggest you have a look at the "Choice Based Lettings" Webpage at :-

http://www.highland.gov.uk/directory/38/choice_based_lettings

Albyn Housing Society (http://www.albynhousing.org.uk/our_housing (http://www.highland.gov.uk/directory/38/choice_based_lettings))

Cairn Housing Association (http://www.cairnha.com/find-home)

Pentland Housing Association (http://www.pentlandhousing.co.uk/choice-based-letting)

There are quite a few Houses ect., available to rent which you can put an offer in for, well worth a look.

sorry but you're WRONG ,there must be an acute housing shortage in Thurso and surrounding area as that's the only way that Pressued area status would be given which stops anyone buying their homes under the right to buy scheme . Funny thing is that this restriction only applies to Pentland tenants and not Council ones, the RTB closes in August. Strange thing is that's it's the HRC that give out the PAS restriction certificate but never stopped their tenants from their RTB, looks really bad and someone's up to something dodgy if it's only some tenants who had their RTB confiscated.

So what is happening with the house he owns. Lying empty or rented out?

Within the Pentland Housing there is a Housing Shortage. At Present they have only one house that is Vacant and that will be occupied soon. Whereas The Highland Council have 47 Properties Vacant and some of these have been empty for several months. That is why Pentland Housing has a PAS order and the Highland Council does not. In two months time no one anywhere will be able to buy any Social Housing. Simples :D

Ooft, no need to shout Dozy.
Who mentioned Thurso in all of this?

The right to buy scheme is and always has been a piece of nonsense, which has made many the older generation a shedload of cash whilst leaving the youth unable to find affordable housing to rent in large parts of the country.

Hold on it was a Westminster government vote grabber that was used to break social housing and fill the pocket of the rich private landlords, many Tory supporters. Yes it put money into the pockets on many that would have never been able to buy but that's no excuse to cheat people out of that Rights. It's the government that robbed young folk of affordable homes to rent not RTB. Caithness has more houses for rent than it needs,so it makes sense to sell them off, and let the new owners invest in doing them up and putting money into the economy and generating jobs. The council and RSL's always have the begging bowl out for what it classes as improvements and to stay within the regs ,the ones that also have charitable status seen to be at the top of the pile. RTB has unburied councill's are others from investing in old properties that would not meet modern living in the long term . If the landlords with overstock sold off those properties and then pasted those funds to councill's in the areas that are real pressured areas they could meet the needs of younger folk ,now that would be a step forward. It's makes no sense to sit on empty properties or to hive them off to substituries and class them as private lets, this just pushes up the cost of renting across the board. Don't blame RTB as there's £millions been lost by tenants through companies failing to abide by the law.

So you see right to buy as being a good thing for social housing in the nation?
