Strange Animal sounds

I was out at Loch Loyal the other night and from 22:00 on wards throughout to about 03:00 in the morning we kept hearing a sound like nothing we have heard before which i suspect is an animal of some kind you could hear them from some distance.

The best description i can five as it was a bit life a whooping sound but what would be making these sounds, i checked all the sounds that deer/stags make and none of them fit the closest i could get was a Lapwing.

However would these be making noises this time of night when its pitch black?

Any suggestions ?

Could it be a snipe drumming, when I first heard I wondered what on earth it was but love the sound

I think it would be a snipe drumming. It is a wonderful sound like nothing else and it is the right time of year for it to be that.

Brilliant thats exactly it and there was me thinking it was the 2nd coming of the war of the worlds.
