I've tried many times to get a compost bn going and every single time have ended up with sticky, slimey, smelly gunge. Can anyone help and tell me what I need to do to get it right?
I've tried everything from bins to crates.
I now have a big plastic bin that I'd like to utilise for a compost bin and don't know where to start.
What ratio of garden grass, vegetable waste etc do I need? What is the secret to good compost?
Sound like you a composting anaerobically this can happen with lots of grass cuttings. This site may help you.

Good site stratman. Porshie, dont give up. Sounds like your compost pile needs more air circulation and a regular turning with pitchfork. You could punch air holes in side of plastic bin and also layer the grass clippings with empty toilet rolls and kitchen paper, or even single sheets of newspaper.
My mantra is "Compost Happens" LOL
In case it's of interest, a couple of days ago I got a 'to the occupier' letter from Scottish Waste Awareness Group who are promoting composting at the moment.
They are doing a special offer on composting bins and the prices are ludicrously low with free delivery. Have been thinking about getting a few (up to 3 per household) myself.

The £28 RRP bin is only £6 (220Litres) the 330 Litre one is £8 (normally £38) and they even do a giant hexagonal 800 litres one for £25 (normally £127).
Looks like a a very good deal to me, and a great way of recycling :)
