A PLAN to transport 700 kilograms of highly-enriched uranium from Dounreay to America was yesterday described as "a secretive and highly risky deal". Tor Justad, chairman of Highlands Against Nuclear Transport, is concerned about the risk of an accident or terrorist attack if the material is transported by air or sea.

A CLAIM that healthy trees have been taken down in Sir John's Square in Thurso, was yesterday denied by Highland Council. A spokeswoman insisted the trees were in a dangerous state or rotten and that is why they were removed.

HIGHLAND Council leader Margaret Davidson yesterday said she is astonished by yesterday's nuclear deal between the UK and US Governments. She said it had "come out of the blue" adding: "The UK Government is well aware of our concerns regarding the threatened removal of the emergency towing vessels in the north and west."

A PUBLIC inquiry focusing on an objection to tackle the A9 bottleneck at Berriedale Braes is to get under way on Thursday. The Scottish Government will host the hearing at Helmsdale Community Centre, into the proposed realignment of the north hairpin of the switchback section.

YOUNG motorists are being offered the opportunity to improve their driving skills, free of charge, in an attempt to tackle anti-social driving in towns and villages in Caithness. The Roadwise Project is giving people, aged between 17 and 25, the chance to take part in the Pass Plus Course, without it costing them a penny.

THE new subsea power link between Caithness and Moray has received a major boost after the European Inveswtment Bank agree to fund almost half of the £1.2 billion project. EIB is to invest £500 million in the Scottish Hydro Energy Transmission project which is designed to supply power generated from wind farms to an estimated two million people in Scotland.

WICK Academy prepared for tomorrow's derby with title-chasing Brora Rangers with a 3-1 victory at Fort William which keeps alive their chances of a top five finish in the Highland League. The Scorries handed a trialist to Inverness-based youngster, Kai Cruckshank, who has been playing for North Caley League outfit, Golspie Sutherland, as they travelled without Ross Allan, Sam Mackay, James Pickles and Michael Steven.
