A PIECE of machinery, purchased by Highland council for £108,000 seven years ago, has been sold for just £1,800. The news - confirmed by the local authority following a tip-off to the John O' Groat Journal - has dismayed local community councillor Don Smith.

A NUMBER of the measures announced in this week's budget will be good news for businesses in Caithness, Scotland and across the rest of the UK according to Trudy Morris. However, the chief excutive of Caithness Chamber of Commerce also said she felt more could be done to help the renewables industry.

PLANS to involve local firms in big Dounreay contracts were this week criticised as being little more than "vague and weasel words". The accusation was made by retired Caithness minister, Ronnie Johnstone who is unhappy the area has not benefited from two recent multimillion pound contracts.

THE Ministry of Defence is objecting to plans for three wind turbines near Dunbeath because of fears they will interfere with radar signals to and from RAF Lossiemouth. Wind Harvest Ltd wants to build the 800 kilowatt turbines on moorland and peat at Hill of Lychrobbie, 2.5 kilometres east of the Caithness village.

AIMING to become part of Lybster again, after being closed for over three years, the new owner of one of the county's most historic hotels says the establishment will open its doors later this month. The Portland Arms Hotel is in the final stages of a £30,000 refurbishment which has given the old building a new lease of life.

THE best festival in the UK was the huge acclaim given to an event which is celebrating success in promoting science in the far north for 14 years. Caithness International Science Festival has been inspiring young minds to learn more about science, technology engineering and mathematics in the fun way at local schools this week.

GREATER use of digital media would help make the far north a more popular destination for visitors by highlighting its range of natural and man-made attractions. So said online journalist Steve Keenan at the second annual one-day conference staged by Venture North, the tourism promotion group in Caithness and Sutherland.
