MAJOR changes are expected within Highland Council following budget cuts of almost £40 million. The way the local authority is to be scrutinised after the loss of 341 staff and the savings which have to be made in many departments, according to Caithness councillor and budget leader, Bill Fernie.

A TOP chef is to become an ambassador for Old Pulteney whisky in what could be said to be a dram good deal. Aiden Byrne, who is described as a rising star of the UK culinary scene,has agreed to take on the role which will involve participating at leading food and drink events throughout the year.

A CAITHNESS councillor has said the local authority made the best of a bad situation over cuts of almost £30 million to its budget. Gail Ross, a Wick Highland councillor and Caithness civic leader, accepted the cuts will impact on the public but insisted those which would affect the most vulnerable, have been removed.

A FORMER long-serving Caithness councillor has died after suffering a stroke while on holiday in south-east Asia. Billy Mowat passed away last Thursday in Indonesia where he had been spending the winter. He was 76.

COMMUNITY representatives are following up concerns about the impact of trucks carrying waste to Seater are having on Caithness roads and fears the county is becoming a dumping ground for the Highlands. Castletown and District Community Council are awaiting a response from Highland Council about the effect the regular movements are having on the environment as well as roads.

PLANS to build an operations and maintenance base at Wick harbour to service one of the biggest offshore wind farms in the world are set to be unveiled to the public. Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm Limited want to build and operate up to 277 turbines off the east Caithness coast with a final investment decision on th venture, expected before the end of the month.
