A FISHING skipper said he was moments away from abandoning ship in the Pentland Firth yesterday. Mark Buchanan feared the Frem would have sunk but for the combined efforts of Thurso lifeboat crew and the Shetland Coastguard chopper.

FISH stocks at Wick river are the healthiest in years as anglers look forward to the new season. Wick Angling association wished all its 250 members tight lines for the season which opened at Bilbster yesterday morning.

THE owner of the former boatyard at Wick is at loggerheads with harbour bosses over the future of the site. James McCaughey has already spent more than £20,000 to demolish the boatyard at the Harbour Quay.

A WICK minister has praised the courage of a terminally- ill bride who was married this week at the Town and County hospital. The Rev. John Nugent, who officiated at the ceremony in a specially-prepared room at the venue, described Sylvia Stubbings as very brave.

SOME Highland Council workers, who have applied for early redundancy, are still waiting to learn the outcome. The local authority received more than 800 responses to its plans to prune its workforce as part of its drive to make £37.9 million in savings.

WICK High School has become the first secondary school in Scotland to launch its own darts academy with dozens of teenagers stepping up to the oche as part of the current major surge in popularity of the pastime. More than 40 pupils have signed up to become members of Wick Darts School.

ARMADALE Farm is to stage an open day focusing on how to maximise returns from a sheep business. It will be hosted by Joyce Campbell who recently picked up the Scottish Sheep Farmer of the Year title.

An art exhibition featuring pieces created in many different mediums is on show in Wick. The St Fergus Gallery is holding the display called object: subject, until February 27 and it features still life works from the Highland Council collection.
