Can't behave then give up drink says sheriff

PEOPLE, who can't behave when out drinking socially, should abstain from alcohol a sheriff has suggested.
Sheriff Kevin Veal made the comment after hearing about a drink-fuelled incident, in which Martin McGowan made a racially-aggravated comment to a Wick reveller.
McGowan, 23, had denied the charge but was found guilty after a trial. The court at Wick, heard yesterday, that he intervened in a heated argument between two woman in High Street, Wick, in the early hours of February 13, last year.
They pair had been in a group which had been out drinking and were heading home. McGowan was said to have called one of the woman, Kimmy Lai, 22, “a black bitch”.
Sheriff Veal, who said that alcohol had been consumed by the various parties “in no small measure” added: “The moral of all of this is, that if you can't behave when you are out drinking, you must decide that drink is not going to form part of your social experience.”
McGowan of 94 Drummore Avenue, Coatbridge, was found guilty and had sentence deferred until November 25 to allow him to demonstrate he can behave.
McGowan, also denied a further charge of assaulting one of the revellers, Emma Ross, a 24-year-old waitress, by head-butting her, but during the trial, fiscal David Barclay stated he was no longer seeking a conviction and the accused was formally found not guilty on the charge. He was working in the far north, at the time..
