Great action shot.
I assume you got the hang of that new zoom lens if the pic is anything to go by.

Hi Colin,

It must be a great way to make a living, though I for one would prefer some where with a bit warmer water. Having said that the Pentland firth does produce a fantastic deep blue on a sunny day like today

Nice pics GH :) What camera do you use?
am going back out this afternoon for a few more shots, will try it without a filter today (i have a UV filter on the big lens and skylight on the medium).
Was going to attempt to cut the grass but lost a bit of the strimmer and mower not working so i think it's a great excuse for more photography :)

What camera do you use?

Thanks Tuggs, It is a D80 / 170-500mm Sigma and even with this I've had to crop quite hard.

Can you come round and break my mower ...and hide the paint..... and the brushes....... and polish the car...... and...and...and......

Sorry Paul, didn't notice your post until i got back.

GH, you will have to teach me how to use my camera please?!
i don't crop i just resize the whole thing.
and yes i reckon i can break your mower, and hide the paint, and the brushes, and the thinners, and the dust sheets lmao

a couple more to add to GH's pics from earlier ...

These shots were taken at Thurso East on Thursday. I'm going to try Brims Ness tomorrow if the weathers/waves good. (Canon EOS350D, Sigma 135 - 400mm, hand-held, no filters)

Have you seen the kit the pros are using (gulp) Canon 600mm's I think (£5500 a pop!! . . . out of my price range for now)

Great shots Deemac :D
they will be at brims again tomorrow, the swell is due to die away for the duration of the competition now unfortunately so they will find it hard work.
there's a couple of people there with their cameras on tripods and the size of the lens they use is huge! they could probably do a macro shot of a pimple on the surfers noses as they wait for a wave! well and truly silly money lenses!
Good luck on getting some pics tomorrow :D i may go out again myself.

Fantastic photos!!!! these are so good you could sell these, but how do you ensure that no-one else uses your photos for profit.

Yes its quite impressive gear that they use but I suppose it is their living......there again they just might be inadequate in other areas:lol:

I can't use these for commercial purposes as i don't have permission off the subject in the picture by way of a model release giving me their permission. From what little i understand if these shots were used for making a profit by someone and they were seen by the guy in them or the original photographer, the vendor would be in the deep and sticky doo doo

Tugmistress, Thanks for the info, not been out to Brims Ness before and I'm also interested in just waves without people shots. Always useful for other projects. (I'm a graphic designer by trade).

These images are resample down too low resolution (800 x 600 to fit and download quickly on this forum) The quality is too low to use commercially other than for website design. You would also get sued if caught (its not worth it)

Also Tugmistress wrote: "I can't use these for commercial purposes as i don't have permission off the subject in the picture by way of a model release giving me their permission. Tugmistress - This is not correct.
As the photographer you have automatic copyright to your images and don't need permission or consent from individuals in a shot (imagine if you did a crowd shot at a football match or a rock concert and had to ask all the crowd for permission!!) Also the paperazzi would be out of business overnight . . . . .

Yes i could use them for 'editorial use' as in like the paperazzi, but not for stock which requires the model releases. i could print them out too and see if the surfers themselves wanted the prints, but i'm too shy to go and ask lol

Some of Saturdays efforts!! The surf was fairly poor but was impressed with the punter turnout. Nice location, (first visit) great rock structures.

I will return when a storms brewing for some more impressive waves.

Excellent GH :D
i believe it is called kite-surfing  or is it kite-boarding? can't remember now lol. there was a course for kids a couple of years back on Dunnet beach during the school summer holidays on it and the neep went on it, came back exhausted but loved it.
