TWO former Wick High staff members have been reported to the procurator fiscal over "financial irregularities" in school funds. The development comes after detectives were called in to investigate reports of substantial sums of money going missing or unaccounted for.
A SHORT film, which a Caithness businessman has helped fund, has been nominated for an Oscar. Evan Anderson, who comes from Wick but is based in Edinburgh, was involved in financing Contrapelo and has been credited as executive producer. The film has already won a host of awards at international festivals but getting short-listed for the Oscars is "simply beyond any of our expectations" he said.
THE revelations that there have been four drug-related deaths in Caithness in the last eight months, has led police to voice concern about the increased use of legal highs in the county. Police Scotland have reported that the marked increase in the use of new psychoactive substances in the far north over the past year, has coincided with a rise in cases involving the supply of drugs.

Beverly and Shona Horton woke up to a nightmare on Sunday when water poured into their property at Church Street, in Halkirk after the garden was submerged under several inches of water.
SCOTTISH Energy Minister Fergus Ewing is to visit Caithness next week when he will be updated on the preparations being made for this summer's scheduled launch of MeyGen's trail-blazing subsea turbines. Two attempts by Mr Ewing to get to the far north last year had to be postponed, once when his plane developed a problem and the other, because of weather-related problems at Wick airport.
CAITHNESS Chamber of Commerce is alarmed at the renewed moves being made to introduce a new tax on tourism. The prospect of the new levy has resurfaced, with SNP former minister Kenny MacAskill's call for Scotland to follow the example of other countries where tourists have to pay a surcharge on their stays in hotels and larger guesthouses.
ANOTHER Caithness firm has been awarded work at the £20 million national nuclear archive in Wick. Caithness Flagstone will provide the paving and specially cut stone at the entrance area for the triangular-shaped centre which will house records from Dounreay and other atomic sites across the UK.
