Inquiry to open next week into lorry crash tragedy
AN inquiry is to open at Wick next week, into the death of a lorry driver who crashed on a notorious stretch of the A9 in Caithness.
Bruce Cormack, a partner in the haulage firm W D Cormack & and Sons, was bringing a consignment of fertiliser north, on September 18, 2014, when the tragedy occurred on the south Berriedale Brae.
Emergency services converged on the accident scene where firefighters had to use cutting gear to release 41-year-old Mr Cormack from his cab. The road was closed for eight hours and northbound traffic was re-routed via the A897 Strathhalladale road. The holdup delayed ballot boxes from Caithness reaching the referendum count at Dingwall.
Shortly before the accident inquiry date was announced, the Scottish Government announced that there had been several objections to the draft plan for improvements to Berriedale Braes which might lead to a public inquiry following objections.
Mr Cormack, of Huna House, Durran, is survived by his wife Lynn, son Scott and parents Sandy and Jane. The fatal accident inquiry, before Sheriff Andrew Berry, will commence on Monday.
