Worth a look outside 9.45pm Monday night - Aurora may be happening
Just nipped out two minutes ago (out West) and there is activity right now; big glow in sky and quite a few 'searchlight' type 'rays' coming from North - mind you it's minus 2!
I wasted 30 minutes finding the connection for my camera tripod - so missed most of it probably. Anyway I am still trying to figure out how to take night photos but here goes:

Amber alert out for tonight (Sunday 20th December) from AuroraWatchNet
Sadly it is cloudy where I am near Watten, hopefully less cloudy where you are, worth a look outside!
I also put up more pictures taken from last Monday night on http://www.croft.website/nightsky/index.html
I have also watched some online videos of taking night sky photographs and I think I have figured out why the pictures are not in focus - seemingly when you take pictures on manual it needs to be focused slightly before the infinity setting. I have also bought myself a digital timer remote control which may also help with stopping any camera shake when taking the picture (while on a tripod). So maybe next time I photograph the Northern Lights they may even be in focus!
Just had this warning in: "AuroraWatch UK amber alert, 2015-12-31 20:17:01UT.
Detected by AuroraWatchNet. Lancaster #1, England" - Been out, bit of a glow north, but cloudy 'out west'..
I went outside to take some pictures of the Aurora around 11pm New Years Eve - and it is still visible over Caithness at 12.30 am - not very spectacular sadly
