A sockpuppet is an online identity (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_identity) used for purposes of deception. The term, a reference to the manipulation of a simple hand puppet made from a sock (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sock_puppet), originally referred to a false identity assumed by a member of an Internet (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet) community who spoke to, or about, themselves while pretending to be another person. The term now includes other misleading uses of online identities, such as those created to praise, defend or support a person or organization, or to circumvent a suspension or ban from a website. A significant difference between the use of a pseudonym and the creation of a sockpuppet is that the sockpuppet poses as an independent third-party unaffiliated with the puppeteer. Many online communities attempt to block sockpuppets.

I have just noticed that BetterTogether has been banned for this reason -

Banned (Sock Puppet of previously banned user) http://forum.caithness.org/images/reputation/reputation_pos.png http://forum.caithness.org/images/reputation/reputation_pos.png http://forum.caithness.org/images/reputation/reputation_pos.png http://forum.caithness.org/images/reputation/reputation_pos.png http://forum.caithness.org/images/reputation/reputation_pos.png http://forum.caithness.org/images/reputation/reputation_highpos.png http://forum.caithness.org/images/reputation/reputation_highpos.png

Could somebody enlighten me as to why. With the exception of people who use their own names, anybody on here can be accused of that. I personally use my partner's log in as the Org does not like my e mail address but I have never hidden who I am, I didn't think BetterTogether had either.

I would understand it if there was a variation of the name BetterTogether and maybe three or four posts, but not one thousand, two hundred and thirty nine posts later. That explanation does not seem fair to me, or I could just be misunderstanding the meaning of sockpuppet used in this instance.

clearly it has been manipulated to suit the requirements of the management.
no points for guessing that one.
BT opposed the "YES" nature of the site and was removed because he was vocal in that regard, simple as that.
Caithness.org may as well be renamed wings over scotland for it has become a simple puppet of the SNP / Yes campaign, thta is why the sire is failing along with the Yes campaign

I'm confused too, posted this 29th Nov : " Better Together http://forum.caithness.org/images/statusicon/user-offline.png Banned (Sock Puppet of previously banned user)
Just logged in to find that BT is now banned - must admit never seen an explanation following the word 'Banned' any chance of why that had to be explained? I see he has been on the Org for 14 months - how come it took so long? what suddenly brought this to the attention? sorry to say but to the casual user of this forum, it looks bad. Been looking through his/her posts and can't see anything that would instigate the action. I know that certain things have gone on (it's one of my jobs), but shortly after, it does seem unusual the banning takes place. But hey, I'm just an ordinary bod, yep, been suspended a couple of times, and no doubt I have been very very near to being neutered..

Of course this show is privately-run, and the owner can actually do what he likes.. Mrs Beks (sorghaghtanibecki) comes on here occasionally.. actually it was many many years ago she joined and was at the time Bill was dealing with hacking that was going on, but was perfectly happy to accept that Mrs Beks would use this same PC I do.. Wonder how many others who have partners who use the same PC?

I didn't realise you had written something as well, I just thought BetterTogether was being a bit quiet ! I use the same computer as my partner, with the exception of our phones which have internet access, we only have one desktop computer which we both use. Actually, I have not been able to access the Org on my phone since they changed the server a few weeks back.

I would imagine most houses have 1 PC / laptop and 1 router, so technically do you need 2 PC's / laptops, if say a couple are registered under seperate names and are posting using the same PC/ laptop / router ?

Ive had periods where I thought that and refrained from posting but in all honesty, I cant let the obvious very Pro SNP posters and garbage posted go unchallenged.
