No licence would have made accused jobless

A SHERIFF refrained from disqualifying a speeding driver after learning that a ban would cost him his job.
The accused, Donald Urquhart, 52, admitted the offence at Wick Sheriff Court yesterday.
He was was responding to an urgent work-related job when he was caught at the wheel of his employer's van at a speed of 80 mph at Ousdale, Berriedale, where the limit for such vehicles is 50mph.
Sheriff Andrew Berry observed that Urquhart had a number of convictions for road traffic offences and already had six penalty points on his licence.
The sheriff, who considered a letter from Urquhart's employers stating that disqualification would cost him his licence, told the accused that he had come "very close" to a ban.
Urquhart, of 46 Macrae Crescent, Dingwall, was fined £325 and incurred four penalty points.
