PARENTS from the Staxigoe area have hit out at plans by Stagecoach to axe a bus service which takes local youngsters to and from school. They are to vent their feelings at a meeting of Wick High School Parent Council, on Monday night, which the the bus company's north Highland managing director, Steve Walker, is expected to attend.
SUNDAY'S Remembrance Day parades and services in the far north, went ahead in cool but dry conditions.
HOPES are high that the new Wick High School campus could eventually be linked to the town's district heating scheme. Caithness General Hospital has signed up to the initiative and now operator, Ignis Biomass, wants the school to do the same.
BULLYING in Highland schools hit a record high, last year, with nearly half of all Primary 7 pupils surveyed, telling Highland Council they had been victims. New statistics show reported incidents are up on last year and it is the most vulnerable pupils, the disabled or those caring for sick or invalid parents, who are most likely targets.
CAITHNESS Presbytery has voted against a proposal which would allow a minister in a same-sex marriage to be called to a charge, despite earlier approving those in the civil partnerships to do so. Wick St Fergus Church minister, John Nugent, who asked for his dissent on the decision to be record by the presbytery, is concerned about the message the five for and 12 against, vote, will send out to people who are lesbian, gay bisexual or transgender.
A FIGHT by Wick's Leith Walk residents over a one-way system and access to their properties, has forced local Highland Council roads officials to perform another U-turn. At a meeting to discuss traffic management problems earlier this year, the one-way system around the new primary school being built on the north side of Wick, attracted a lot of flak with many of those up-in-arms, claiming they were unaware they had a chance to object to the plan before it was approved.
WICK Academy manager Gordon Connelly is slamming the Highland League Committee for what he perceives as an unfair schedule of fixtures his team is having to fulfill over the next two weeks. The Scorries have been forced to take on title challengers Formartine United, just three days before their North of Scotland Cup final, whereas opponents Nairn County have a free week.
