Ballade of the Dentist's Reply
by H S MacKintosh

You that have dared to mock my honest calling,
"My soul is to be damned," I think you said?
You found my conversation unenthralling?
My gems of Kipling far above your head?
You think I hurt you? You have cause to dread!
Just wait until our next appointed session,
We'll make you wish to Heaven you were dead -
A rich revenge is planned by my profession!

You know not how disastrous, how appalling,
Can be the work of drill and molten lead,
What torture (quite without unseemly brawling)
Is in the power of dentists who see red!
Expect no scrap of mercy - not a shred
Of pity: you shall know for this transgression
The gamut of all pangs, from A to Z -
A rich revenge is planned by my profession!

Come to us once again! We'll send you bawling
Homeward, to have no peace at board or bed:
Our exquisite, intolerable mauling
Shall make you loathe the sight of beer and bread.
Meanwhile may caries grip your mouth and spread,
Pyorrhoea rot your teeth in swift succession,
So that you come before our rage be sped:
A rich revenge is planned by my profession !

Envoi
Cad, you came once for treatment, having fed
On Spanish onions - strong beyond expression -
And gassed me till my senses almost fled:
A rich revenge is planned by my profession !
