SIX staff in government offices in Wick's Girnigoe Street are to lose their jobs despite a last-ditch effort by their union to save them. the three executive officers and three administrative officers deal with employment and support allowance decisions with most believed to have between 20 and 30 years experience.
CELEBRANTS in Caithness are struggling to cope with demand for requests to carry out weddings, funerals and naming ceremonies as a recruitment drive in the far north to train new celebrants has begun. Humanist Scoeity Scotland has reported its three local celebrants are almost fully booked for the next 15 months with them, at the point of having to turn down requests for services next year.
ALMOST 1000 people in the far north have been fed by emergency vouchers in the last 12 months as reliance on a local food bank continues on an unward spiral. Figures released by Caithness Foodbank reveal that the number receiving emergency food parcels in the area, has grown by a quarter, from 768 to 958 between September 2014 and September 2015.
STEMMING the exodus south, of young people in Caithness and Sutherland by better matching them with the local jobs market, is the focus of a newly-launched initiative. Spearheaded by Caithness Chamber of Commerce, up to £700,000 is being earmarked to support plans to improve links between education and work, address the skills gap and cut the rate of youth unemployment in the far north.
FOR thousands of families over the last 21 years, it has given them "the key to the the door" and a place to call home in Thurso and Wick. After celebrating its 21st birthday last Thursday, Pentland Housing Association is now looking forward to the future to meet the needs of its tenants for years to come.

KIND-HEARTED animal lovers took to Thurso boating pond for a canoe challenge in aid of a charity, working to save dogs being used in Asia's meat, leather and fur trade. The volunteers came together for the event organised by Lyth- based stable Horsin' Around, with instruction from Pentland Canoe Club.
SCORRIES fans were left shellshocked only seconds after celebrating what they thought was an inury time winner as they watcheir their Lowland League opponents equalise with almost the last kick of the game. The match finished in a 2-2 draw forcing a replay.
