A COASTGUARD volunteer has criticised police for not launching a search for an Australian tourist on the day she was reported missing. Lynne Radke was found dead in the water off Duncansby Head by local fishermen, on Friday afternoon, two days after fears for her safety came to light and four days after she was last seen alive.
LESBIAN gay, bisexual and transgender people or those who are questioning their identity are being invited to join a local group aiming to tackle the stigma, discrimination and isolation they might face. The North Highlands LGBT social group was set up in April 2013 following an equality roadshow run by the Equality Network and the Highland LGBT Forum for LGBT people living in, or visiting Caithness or other parts of the Highlands and Islands.
SEVERAL council houses in Caithness have been empty for 12 months despite 390 people being on a waiting list for new homes in the county. This is down to Highland Council not receiving applications to live in certain properties. A Caithness Courier investigation has revealed that, since January, Caithness housing offices in Thurso and Wick have received a total of 476 applications. At present 390 applicants are waiting for accommodation after naming a Caithness settlement as their first choice.
A THURSO athlete has completed an immense challenge, running 110 miles to Inverness in less than 24 hours, all to raise money for a local boy. Lorna Stanger described the feat as "just going for a run but a bit of a longer one".
THE trailblazing MeyGen marine energy venture passed another milestone this week with the arrival in the Pentland firth of the cable-laying ship Siem Deya 1. The vessel is to install the four sub-sea lines which will take the electricity from the demonstration sub-sea turbines to the power conversion building at the Ness of Quoys. The four turbines are expected to go live, next summer.
AUSTRALIAN classic car enthusiasts made an epic 10,000 mile road trip to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the most iconic models of the 1950s. The Antipodean MGA Tour shipped their classic cars from the southern hemisphere all the way to the UK, to take part in the 10 day MGA Diamond Anniversary Land's End to John O Groats tour.
THE failure of Wick Academy's defence to react to a throw-in, allowed Connor Scully to nip in and score the only goal of the game as Cove Rangers won a dull, bad-tempered encounter at Harmsworth park on Saturday.
