CAITHNESS has a growing problem with drugs known as legal highs which have been linked to several suicides in the county in recent years. Ranald MacAuslan, vice-chairman of the Caithness Durg and Alcohol Forum, this week flagged up the danger posed by the psychoactive substances.

A 25-tonne cable containment structure, fabricated in Caithness, has been assembled in Orkney as part of a renewables-related trial project. the structure, created by JGC Engineering & Technical Services Ltd, will be fixed on the seabed and aims to help facilitate the connection of underwater energy devices.

A CAITHNESS mother has been "overwhelmed" by the public response to her attempts to help migrants stranded in northern France. Frances MacLeod set up the Caithness to Calais Facebook page last week, after watching harrowing images of the worst refugee crisis in Europe since World War 11.

A NEW Territorial Army base could be established in Caithness as the Army looks to increase the number of volunteer reservists in the far north. Last year, the organisation announced its lease at the TA Hall at Dempster Street in Wick, had come to an end, leaving the organisation with no permanent base in the county with reservists having to travel to Inverness to receive training.

A PLAN to axe three bus services in Caithness has been attacked by local passengers. They hit out at the proposed cuts in the Stagecoach services which would come into effect in November. The changes were revealed by the company's north director Steve Walker at a meeting of the Caithness Bus Users Group in Thurso.

A THURSO athlete is aiming to run to Inverness in 24 hours or less and follow that up, a week later by running the Baxter's Loch Ness marathon. Lorna Stanger's epic challenge gets under way at midnight next Friday and is aimed at raising cash for her neighbouring three-year-old Kayden Gordon whose family are trying to fund an £80,000 operation to enable him to walk.

THE Co-op food store in Thurso has re-opened after a £200,000 refit.

GARY MANSON celebrated his 500th game for the Scorries by setting up the opening goal which provided the platform for a straightforward Highland League victory over Forres Mechanics, on Wednesday evening. A presentation was held at the end of the gameon Wednesday evening, for the wing back.
