SCOTTISH Health Secretary Shona Robson has been told that health services in Caithness are "in meltdown". The claim was made after she arrived in Wick to preside over the annual review of NHS Highland, as the health authority battles to resolve a chronic staffing crisis in the county's hospitals and GP practices.
THE school bus service between John O' Groats and Wick has been described as "appalling" and "at times dangerous". Wick High School parent council chairman, Iain Baikie, made the claims to Steve Walker, Stagecoach's managing director in the Highlands, during a Caithness Bus Users Group meeting in Thurso.

TALKS are under way to look into the feasibility of making much greater use of rail to transport the estimated four million tonnes of standing and fallen timber from the Flow country to processing plants in the south via Inverness. Branchline is an initiative being drive by HITRANS, the regional transport partnership for the Highlands and Islands, with the aim of helping the industry harvest the timber while it has value and at the same time keeping heavy lorries off the fragile road network by transporting the timber closer to markets, by rail.
THURSO is being put to the back of the queue in the development of sports facilities in favour of projects being proposed in Inverness, said a councillor Donnie Mackay is angry with a decision by Highland Council to agree funding of up to £150,000 to develop detailed designs and costings of proposed projects in the city.
SCRABSTER Harbour Trust has seen a recovery in fishing activity in line with newly released figures showing a big increase in volume and value of fish landed across Scotland in 2014. The value of fish landed by Scottish vessels last year, increased by 18 per cent in real terms from 2013 and the quantity of fish landed, rose by 31 per cent. That equates to 481000 tonnes of sea fish and shellfish landed by Scots-based vessels in 2014, with a value of £514 million.
A NORTH MSP has pledged his support for a campaign to create a passing loop to relieve congestion on the north rail line. John Finnie has called on the Scottish Government to back the Friends of the Far North Line call for the upgrade of a section known as the Lentran Loop as part of the Inverness City Deal.
