Gallow Hill

On an old map of Wick the corner of Hill avenue and George Street is named as Gallow Hill.
Does anyone know how this got it's name? Could it have been used as a Gallows at some time in the past?

i have a recollection of playing as a child with a friend in the garden at mount pleasant - the b & b on the corner of george st / hill ave. my friends nana told us there once was a hangmans noose there long ago. she must have been right!
