i think wick is in need of a regular CRAFTERnoon get together. if you dont know what this is check it out on the net. many uk uk places have these crafternoon meetings and its a good way to meet like minded people and share and show what your making.
its a lot better than having to pay out to go to evening classes, when all you want to do is socialise and already know how to do a particular craft.

personally, that is what i tend to avoid fran. i dont want to go to something that either are tuition classes, have the feel of tuition classes even when they are supposed to be social get-togethers, or only last a few weeks.

what i like the idea of is a regular get-together that we can sit and relax, chat and craft, with our own supplies (if we should want to), and somewhere that isnt too expensive.

I thought it was going to be a bout cheesie macaroni [lol]

I dabble in scale models, sometimes I do it a lot and sometimes go months or years without, I especially like to make cars, I'll buy the kit model and build it but then customise the paint job in my own way.

I have a box of card making stuff, that I purchased when I was in my card making moment. I have a box of scrapbooking stuff from the scrapbooking era, I have a half finished patchwork quilt (about 20years unfinished???)

That's my craft history...

I stick to my writing now, at least all of that can be contained more easily in a computer or disc.

I have been known to make cards, but don't seem to find the time these days.

I'm also into cross stitch and am in the middle of doing one. I've got until August to finish it, so hopefully I'll get it done (but knowing my track record, I might not!!)

I tend to spend most of my free time writing but I taught myself to knit about 3 years ago and I really enjoy it. I bought a book on teddy bear making but never got round to doing it. I plan to learn to crochet and hopefully sewing aswell (I can do the basics but its pretty sloppy!!). Would also love to take up drawing. I used to draw a LOT when I was a kid and got quite good at it but never do it nowadays.

The group of ladies that meet at the PPP are great, it's not a structured class & if you want to learn about something there's always someone there who knows. We get pretty noisy at times and have a laugh. As for being expensive you take your own bits and they charge an extortionate £1.50 for tea and cakes ha ha. The group is pretty full at the mo but if you're interested enquire and I might see you there.

I go in spurts on the craft thing. I have knitted a few aran sweaters that I lost interest in right before knitting the last sleeve. I did a huge scrapbook for each of the kids with all their photos, report cards, etc., for each school year. I hated every minute of scrapbooking but they were lovely when they were finished. I did ceramics for a while and toyed with one stroke painting but I have yet to find a craft I really enjoy.

I wish someone would have the patience to teach me how to knit, crotchet sew and be able to follow a pattern. I think it would be a great achievement to be able to do this.. i was taught how to knit and sew by my mum when i was little but have never done it in years and i dont think she has the time or patience to teach me now!

I knew you lot were out there....
I'm into crafty things in a big way. Sew (albeit with alot of help from mum), cross stitch, embroider, knit, crochet (really stuck just now), make cards and have tried scrapbooking.
Would love it if they put a section on here for us crafters as there is alot of talent in Caithness. There are a few 'get together' groups around, Busy Bees, up in Murkle, a night in Mey pub, the PPP on a Tuesday morning and there is a group that meet for the winter months in Pultneytown Parish Church. Plus all the organised classes run by the college or craft shops. Don't discount the WRI either, they do have younger members ladies.
(just found this thread whilst hubby was looking back a page).

I chop and change every so often on the craft front. I've been into photography about 20 years now. I've carried on from childhood a love of Airfix models, matchstick models,(and from my teens nude models lol), doing jigsaws and recently bought art materials to start drawing again.

I make the odd bit of jewellery, but now have my own small business selling beads and jewellery-making findings.

Photography's my other big love - I'm a bit too cack-handed for proper craft-y things, much as I enjoy them

Regarding scrapbooks, there is a woman I worked with in Thurso who has every photo of weddings printed in the Caithness Courier and John O'Groat Journal over the last 50-ish years. It was originally started by her mother and she carried it on.

I thought I'd posted in this thread!

I've tried loads of crafty stuff, but lost interest once I thought I'd cracked them.........salt dough modelling, glass engraving, knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, tapestry, Railway scenery modelling etc etc.

I am still into cross-stitch and 1/24 doll's house scratch building and furnishing (1/12 is too big in limited space) when I get time from my websites.

That is some achievement. I might be way off the mark but I imagine that is done with sugar paper scrap books while the 'modern' hobby involves using archival quality paper and embellishments where the pages are stored in acid free albums, to preserve photos and memories. If you hadn't guessed, that is my main crafty hobby! Along with ATCs. :)

 It did sound a bit heavy, didn't it!

ATCs are Artist Trading Cards - a bit like footie cards or Pokemon cards for grown ups (grown up on the outside, probably not on the inside). The rules are that the cards must be 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" and can only be swopped, not sold. The creator can do whatever design or use whatever medium they wish - paint, collage, pencils, sewing - anything to create a one-off or sets of miniature works of art, as basic or elaborate as they like, and then these are swopped with other people. There are worldwide forums where people can post images of what they have made and are offering to swop. :)

Well.....you learn something new every day. Where can I find out more about this? I don't think it's something I could get into, (due to personal cicumstance's just now), but it's piqued my curiosity.

A wider definition can be seen here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artist_trading_cards) but I reckon your best bet would be to Google Artist Trading Cards and then have a browse. :)

A dream scrapbook sounds interesting Sweetpea. That would make a good subject for a circle journal.

i am a textile craft worker and supply wholesale to a few shops - i also enjoy knitting and crochet and would love to find a pottery class locally.
the craft shop in Wick holds lots of classes on card making, jewellery making, quilting - and they are so nice and friendly :)
