A LORRY firm has stopped delivering fresh fish from Caithness to France until it can be confident its drivers can make the trip without being attacked. D Steven and son has suspended its runs to France after lorries from other Highland haulage firms were hijacked and cargoes worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, destroyed.

ENERGY minister Fergus Ewing will be visiting the MeyGen site in Caithness, today, as it reaches "a significant milestone" in its development. The last of four bore holes for the initial phase of the scheme has been completed while work is about to start on the construction of the onshore power conversion centre.

WEEDS are turning parts of Castletown into an eyesore according to a local resident. George Campbell, who has live in the village since the early 1970s, said the weeds were on pavements and roads and vegetation was overgrown in places.

POLICE Scotland is still set to close emergency call centres in Invernss and Aberdeen despite being urged to postpone closures until a review is carried out. A number of Highland politicians called for the delay following the deaths of John Yuill and Lamara Bell. The couple died after lying in their crashed car for three days following an accident on the M9 at Stirling on July 5.

THE Halkirk Highland Games, which were held at Recreation Park, on Saturday afternoon, attracted over 2500 people and generated takings of £ll,500. The response from the public delighted organisers although the crowd and the gate were both down on last year when the respective totals were 2700 and £12,000.
