HIGHLAND Council will be paying punitive rates of interest for more than 50 years, on loans totalling over £117 million from banks and a building society. Some have an interest rate of 11.5 per cent and will not be paid off until 2066.

DENTAL appointments in Wick are being postponed for weeks as the health authority revealed there is a shortage of dentists available in the town. NHS Highland has been forced to prioritise patients with the greatest need for dental care which has resulted in the cancellation of appointments for less urgent cases.

STARK choices face Highland councillors as they deal with budget cuts of £46.3 million over the next three years. But it is "crucial" the needs of rural communities "are properly recognised".

MOBILE phone users in Caithness are backing calls by a Highland MP to allow customers to cancel contracts if they are receiving poor reception service from their providers. Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey MP Drew Hendry has called on Ofcom and the UK Government to take steps that would allow customers to terminate contracts if they are not receiving the level of the service which they signed up for.

THE roll out of high speed broadband was high on the agenda at the latest meeting of north coast community councillors. The Scottish Governments proposal and the impact these are likely to have, locally, came under the scrutiny of Bettyhaill, Strathnaver and Altnaharra Community Council.

FOR the first time in years the opening night of Lybster Gala week had to be held indoors because of the weather but the change did nothing to dampen spirits. A big crowd turned up at the community centre on Saturday night to enjoy the launch of the annual village festival which was relocated after a morning deluge.
