TRANSPORT representatives in Caithness are calling for some of the proposed £300 million Inverness City and Region Deal cash, to be used to help fund the long-sought after upgrade of Berriedale Braes. The plea comes as a Highland Council chief confirmed the council was keen to include the improvement to the notorious switchback stretch of the A9, in the new funding package.

A BIG-HEARTED youngster from Castletown, who had her hair braided daily, since she was a tot, has had her locks chopped off to help children undergoing cancer treatment. Bernadette Nicol took the decision herself six months ago to have her hair cut in aid of the Little Princes Trust and has so far raised £650 through her efforts.

AN £890 overspend was incurred providing locum cover at Caithness General Hospital last year. NHS Highland director of operations north and west, Gill McVicar, also said the cost of surgical back-up at the Wick hospital at weekends, is £28,000 a month.

THE Scottish Conservatives have highlighted what they claim to be hypocrisy after it emerged energy minister, Fergus Ewing, campaigned against wind farms. Mr Ewing objected to wind farm developmwnet in 2007 when he was in opposition.

Veterans and current representatives from the Army, Navy and RAF, gathered at the town's war memorial outside Caithness General Hospital to honour those who returned from armed conflicts and those who did not.

A FRENCH woman has been charged with causing the weekend fatal crash on the A9 in Caithness. France Paule Gracieuses Lautier (62) appeared in private at Wick Sheriff Court on Wednesday, charged with dangerous driving which resulted in the death of Thurso woman Elizabeth Williams. Lautier made no plea or declaration and was released on bail.
