Can anyone help plz

My b/f built his own computer and when he loaded in windows XP it was running fine for months, but it has started running slow and knackering up so he wiped all the hard drive and tried to load windows XP back in,but it won't do it, it says the NTLDR or something like that is missing, but it will load windows 98 no bother

Could anyone tell me what NTLDR means and how to fix it please???

WE want XP not 98

Cheers

When you turn the PC on, press F8 repeatedly until it brings up a screen giving you differeny options to start, then choose the one you want.

get the "exact" error message and type it into the search on the Microsoft support knowledgebase website - http://support.microsoft.com

is the BIOS set to boot from the CD drive? Hit the DEL key when starting to get into the BIOS then look under advanced setting and boot settings.

Then try again.

Riffman is correct in what he is saying your windows xp cd is also acts as a bootable cd providing your cd is a windows xp cd and not an image of windows xp like what u get when buy most computers because if its an image of windows xp it wont work I typed in NTLDR in a google search and it said its not a bootable cd

Possibly, you may need to fdisk the HDD and start again...

Fdisk is on 98 bootdisks - http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

It's not an easy solution but if you can get your head around fdisk then you should have a dust free HDD to work on.

Did you try whacking XP over 98, not ideal but may get you up and running :)

NTLDR is missing basically means your PC is trying to boot from a non bootable disk. This is the msg you'd get if you left a floppy disk in your drive. Like suggested it could be the CD you're using. You said it would load Windows 98 so it seems as if it is atleast booting from the CD-Drive. Can you not load Win 98 and then try upgrading to XP?
