THE future of more than 30 proposed wind farms in the far north has been thrown into doubt after the UK government yesterday announced it is to axe subsidies for schemes that do not have planning permission. MSP Rob Gibson has accused Westminster of "sabotaging" the Scottish economy while major utilities are left wondering whether millions of pounds they have spent developing schemes may have to be written off.
TESCO is refusing to confirm claims it has sold an area of land on which it had planned to build a new supermarket in Thurso. Local Highland councillors Donnie Mackay and Roger Saxon, say they have received information the site at Ormlie road has been sold, but have no details about who has purchased the land.

The six-strong team entered their F2 electric race car in the Greenpower Grampian Transport Museum heat at Alford. The heat consisted of two 90-minute races with teams striving to achieve the greatest individual distance.
A FUNDRAISING drive by a Thurso dental clinic, has delivered a cash windfall of £1000 which has been split between five good causes. Bridgend Health Care presented cheques for £200 each to representatives of Thurso Heritage Society, MS People Caithness, North Highland Cancer Information and Support Centre and Caithness Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus during a presentation on Monday. A cheque was also accepted on behalf of Marie Curie.
A CAll has been made for "an overdue upgrade" on a well-used stretch of road in Caithness. Landward Caithness Highland councillor, Willie Mackay, is to push for improvements on a half-mile stretch of the B874 between Halkirk and Glengolly. He made the plea following the recent decision by the local authority to invest £525,000 on the Killimster Moss road over the next three years.
