Surfers from Hawaii and California are heading for the north of Scotland. £60 thousand is up for grabs at the event in Thurso. It'll be a shock to the system for the surf dudes - temperatures in the Highlands are around twenty degrees lower than they're used to.

I remember quite some years ago now when Dunnet hosted the first surfing competition. The TV cameras were there capturing the historic moment of when surfing came to Caithness. There’s a wee sunken track that runs up from the beach past the caravan car park at the east end of the bay. The poor hypothermic competitors were all huddled down in the track, trying to get out of the weather. The surfing Adonis’s tans had all changed from bronze to blue. I don’t know about surfing, it took all my courage to paddle.
