A VILLAGE lollipop man in Caithness was allowed to continue working while he faced charges of rape and a string of other serious offences includeding one involving a minor. Hugh McPhee was found guilty at Edinburgh High Court, last week ,of raping and assaulting two pregnant women in Thurso and Wick between 1980 and 2002 and will be sentenced next month.

THERE has been a mixed start to this year's tourist season in Caithness with trade for accommodation providers picking up, after a quiet start but visitor attractions reporting brisk business. Caithness Horizons has been "heaving" over the past couple of weeks at its base in the former Thurso town hall which it shares with Visit Scotland.

A SENIOR UK Government minister has been urged to ask the Royal Bank to review its decision to close its branch in Lybster. The call was made by Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross MP, Paul Monaghan, in a letter to Business Secretard Sajd Javid.

PUPILS from rural schools claimed the main individual silverware up for grabs on the final night of Caithness Music Festival at Thurso High School, on Friday evening. Katie Sinclair's rendition of "The Cricket" won over judge Margaret Smith in the inter-age group sing-off, for the Henry Rosie Shield.

HALKIRK celebrated a week fit for royalty as the village concluded its annual gala celebrations with the crowning of its new queen. Louise Rogers was named this year's Halkirk gala queen during the final night of the week-long event, which was hailed a success by organisers.

JOHN O' GROATS were put to the sword on Saturday as Wick Groats landed the first trophy of the Caithness county league season with a runaway victory. The destination of the Colin Macleod Memorial Cup was all but decided in a devastating five- minute spell midway through the first half when the Wick team scored three goals. The final score was 7-1.
