Jury take only 32 minutes to acquit Thurso man

A THURSO man, facing a serious assault charge, has been acquitted after a trial lasting three days.

A jury of nine women and six men took only 32 minutes to find the reduced indictment against William
McPhee not proven, by a majority, at Wick Sheriff Court yesterday.

The 52-year-old had denied assaulting Marwin Roberts at her home at 29 Henderson Street, Thurso on June 2 last year, after they argued in the early hours.

McPhee, of 1 Trostan Road, Thurso, was alleged to have pushed her, causing her to fall to the living room floor, sat astride of her and pinned her down and seized her by the throat, restricting her breathing.

The accused was said to have told police that Ms Roberts, 52, had hit him over the head with a bottle.
