THE company behind a multimillion-pound investment at John O' Groats has been accused of "not listening to the local community" over the next phase of the development. Objectors to Natural Retreats' outline planning application, are concerned that, if approved, next week, there will be a loss of car parking and a coach-turning area at the site.

A MARINE wildlife rescuer has described the effort to save 21 pilot whales which stranded on the shore at Staffin on Skye. Scarfskerry man, Alistair Jack, director trustee and Scottish national organiser of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, co-ordinated the rescue effort from Aberdeen, sending a team of six people from Caithness Ullapool and Elgin, to help out.

INDEPENDENT members on Highland Council are looking to give themselves a makeover after organising a style consultation. the navel-gazing exercise, will look at ways of how they can better promote their image to the public and how they can be seen as less "destructive " and "flaky" inside council chambers.

MOTORCYCLISTS are being blamed for turning a popular scenic area in Caithness into a mud bath. One local resident claims people are being forced to stay away from the moors by Thurso, as quad and trail bikes have left the area too messy to walk on.
THE scrapping of discounted rail fares for the over-55s has been met with "dismay and anger". So says veteran rail campaigner, Ken Sutherland, who argues the decision by new ScotRail operation Abellio has "misjudged the public mood".

WIND FARM money has opened the world of shinty up to pupils of Thrumster Primary School. The kids will soon be able to choose the sport as one of their after-school activities thanks to a grant from the Tannach and District Community fund.

SIX form Lybster Primary pupils are helping to reinvigorate interest the the school's garden. Green-fingered Jade Kirk, Kirstin Ganson, Aimee Sinclair, Dylan Cundall, Calvin Forbes and Mackenzie Barton-Ogg were all involved in looking after the garden and polytunnel when they were pupils a year ago. And in March, one of the pupil's parents, suggested the garden could do with a bit of a revemp.

CAITHNESS district hosted the YOung Farmers annual Highland rally at Quoybrae with several branches battling for silverware. The Hamilton Auction Mart Trophy is awarded every year to the top placed club and this year's winners were Bower with Halkirk second and Nairn third.
