NHS Highland yesterday belatedly revealed that it has, for the meantime, axed surgical cover at Caithness General Hospital on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Officials say the move is in response to the chronic staffing shortage being experienced at the Wick hospital and could give no assurance when the 24/7 cover would be restored.

NEWS of the death of former Liberal Democrat leader, Charles Kennedy, has been met with shock across his former constituency and the political world. The 55-year-old, who lost his Ross, Skye and Lochaber constituency to the SNP in last month's general election, died at his home in Fort William on Monday. No cause of death has been given, but police said it was not suspicious.

THE oil and gas industry in Caithness has received a welcome boost with the news that an Aberdeen-based firm is to establish a manufacturing base in Lybster. EnerQuip has bought the former fabrication site owned by Forum Energy Technologies and said it will be turned into its base for manufacutring torque products to service the sector.

A CLUTCH of community councils in Caithness are on the brink of going out of existence as they struggle to attract fresh blood. Bower Community Council has gone into abeyance after it fell below the required number of members to function, with advertisements placed to attract new members. Figures released by Highland Council show that of the 12 community councils in Caithness 10, are barely meeting their set quorum.

DERELICT building make Wick look like a war-torn town a local Highland councillor has said. Bill Fernie is calling on the local authority to take some action to force landowners to tear down the eyesore bnuildings that are "spoiling" the town.
THE long-awaited new-look playpark at Wick's Riverside has finally been unwrapped . An opening ceremony was held on Friday evening with Wick Gala Queen, Katie Dunnett, cutting the ribbon to mark the unveiling of the £106,000 kit.

A CAITHNESS schoolgirl has become the first person to represent the Highlands and then win one of the sections at the Robert Burns World Federation's national schools festival. Kirsty Grant was at the Hutchesons' Grammar School in Glasgow, last Saturday, to take part in the festival's instrumental P4/5 competition and impressed so greatly with her fiddle playing that the 10-year-old came first in a class of 17, drawn from among the best young performers across Scotland.

IT was standing room only at Wick Accordion and Fiddle Club celebrated their 40th anniversary with a night full of top music and laughs. Nearly 200 people turned up to enjoy the evening of entertainment also the final club night of the 2014/15 season with local performers galore and guest artistes, the Iain MacPhail Scottish Dance Band having everyone up dancing by the end of the night in Mackays Hotel.
