CALLS are growing from parents and councillors to replace Thurso High School which they feel is outdated, with a new campus similiar to what is being built in Wick. Landward councillor Matthew Reiss has contacted offic ials at Highland Council headquarters to discuss what it would take to build the new school.

POLICE officers in Caithness are dealing with fewer incidents of drink-driving following the new limit being introduced in Scotland. Sergeant Debbie Simpson said they have seen a change in motorists' attitudes in that they are not prepared to take the risk under the new rules which mean one pint of lager or a single glass of wine could put them over the limit.

MOTORISTS have been blasted for displaying "shocking behaviour" behind the wheel while roadworks are being carried out through the centre of Thurso. Driving in front of oncomking traffic, dodging traffic controllers and cutting in front of contractors' vehicles, are some of the claims directed at errant drivers.

A FOOTBALL club which suffered one of its worst defeats ever, is blaming the fire service after half of its team had to go on a training course. Lybster FC suffered an embarrassing 16-0 defeat at the hands of Pentland United, on Tuesday night, when the club started the match with just eight players.

SCOTTISH Hydro Electric Tranmission is to start work on the second phase of its plans to build an undersea power cable bedtween Caithness and Moray next week. The £1.1 billion project, which will link Spittal and Blackhillock, near Keith, has been conceived to service 1.2 gigawatts of new electricity generation from wind, wave and tidal-powered sources.

NHS Highland is hoping their enterprising plan to "Go Dutch" to help address the problems of filling medical vacancies in Caithness and other parts of their patch, could pay dividends. The health authority took the unusual step of advertising unfilled posts at its hospitals in the Dutch media, to capitalise on the regular air links between Inverness and Amsterdam. So far, it has received six expressions of interest from the Netherlands by medical professionals who say they are interested in working in the area.

A NEW apprenticeship scheme has been launched by the Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust. The programme, which has attracted support from celebrated gardener Alan Titchmarsh, is aimed at offering graduates the first step on the employment ladder with continued tuition under the guidance of experts includiing the former Ground Force star.
