Sheriff's warning for
driver who seems to
"do as he pleases"

A WICK motorist caught driving without licence and insurance
for the second time has been fined and banned.
Passing sentence, at Wick, Sheriff Andrew Berry told Donald
Gunn that, given his record, he should have known better.
Gunn, 27, of 27 Loch Street, Wick, was fined a total of
£540 and was banned from driving for 162 days.
Fiscal David Barclay accepted not guilty pleas to further
charges of careless driving and failing to report an
accident.
The court heard that police investigating it at Mid
Clyth, on the A99, around 7am on September 18, last year,
discovered that Gunn held only a provisional driving licence
and was not accompanied by a qualified driver.
Sheriff Andrew Berry commented that the recurring offences
gave the impression that Gunn "did as he pleased" so far as
his driving was concerned and warned him that to drive while
disqualified, would be regarded as "an act in defiance" of a
court order and would result in a jail term.

Judgement day for disturbance accused

A FISHERMAN, who created a disturbance in a police van after
being arrested, will know today whether he has escaped a
prison sentence.
Nineteen-year-old Eddie Macgregor admitted threatening or
abusive behaviour and an extensive record when he appeared
from custody.
Macgregor was arrested in Thurso on Wednesday and while
being driven to Wick police office "made his feelings known"
to officers he accused of targeting the wrong person.
The accused shouted at them and threatened self-harm.
Solicitor Fiona MacDonald said that Macgregor, of 12
Heatherbell Cottages, John O' Groats, was doing his best to
get his life together again and was engaging well with a
community payback order imposed previously.
She said that Macgregor should simply have "kept his mouth
shut" after being arrested, adding that he did not wish to
spend any more of his life in jail.
Sheriff Berry will sentence Macgregor today (Friday)
after consulting a social worker for an up-to-date report on
his background. The accused was remanded
overnight.
