A CAITHNESS nurse survived the devastating earthquake which killed more than 4000 people in Nepal and was yesterday helping treat the injured in a hospital in Kathmandu. Steph Sinclair from Thurso was doing voluntary work with a charity when she got caught up in the earthquake which overwhelmed the country on Saturday.
A HUGE celebration of the armed forces in Caithness this summer has been called off for a year because of the lack of time to organise such a big event. The New Caithness Armed Forces Gala had been planned for June 27, in Wick to tie in with the national Armed Forces Day, an event which aims to raise awareness of the contribution made to the country by those who serve and have served in the forces.
THE SNP's Westminster election hopeful has put his support behind the Ministry of Defence base at Vulcan having a role in cleaning up redundant nuclear submarines which are being stored at Rosyth in Fife. While acknowledging the move is not in line with his party policy, he denies ti would result in Caithness becoming a dumping ground for decommissioned subs.
COMMUNITY representatives have acknowledged their support for the new proposed wind farm at Strathy has a lot to do with the healty annual income the development will generate to tackle the problems faced by the area. While SSE's 39 turbine venture would create few direct jobs, they believe it will help counter the chronic rundown in population and in particular, the exodus of young people from the parish of Farr.
THE local business community got a rare opportunity to put their concerns to the candidate contesting the Caithness Sutherland and Easter Ross seat in next week's General Election. Members of the Caithness Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Snall Businesses got a chance to quiz four of the five candidates at a meeting in the Pentland Hotel in Thurso.
And finally... Old Pulteney has raised a glass to what was a truly golden moment in the company's history after it celebrated winning two gold medals on two different continents. The Wick distillery was named as being responsible for one of the best malts on the planet when it received a gold medal in the Best Scotch Highland Single Malt Whisky category, at the World Whiskies Award 2015, at the Waldorf Hilton in London. Across the Atlantic, Old Pulteney also picked up two awards at the San Fransisco World Spirits competition winning gold and silver medals.
