A NEWLY-ordered £2.6 million vessel is set to be the first new white fishing boat to enter service in Caithness for 27 years. While it is being built in a Danish shipyard, its owner, Andrew Bremner, yesterday launched a broadside at UK and Scottish government agencies for a failure to do enough to support the fishing industry.
A long-established business at John O Groats could soon be closed for good unless a new photographer can be found to man the landmark site's famous signpost. Peter Dymond is stepping down as the official snapper at the end of the road where he has worked for the last 16 years.
WORK will begin "within the next six months" to connect a number of rural areas in Caithness to high-speed broadband. Castletown already has gone "live" but Halkirk, Thrumster, Watten and Lybster are expected to be linked to the network, later in theyear, along with communities in Sutherland including Helmsdale, Lairg and Rogart.

When Morven Mackenzie heard about the Little Princess Trust, a charity providing real hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment, she opted to donate her hair to them.

X-FACTOR has proved a resounding success, pulling a crowd of hundreds of people and raising a total of £6000. The town's Assembly Rooms were packed to the gunnels on Saturday evening with families and groups keen to see what Wick Christmas Lights fundraising event would turn out to be, and they were mightly impressed.
A TRIO of Thurso brothers have been voted by their fans to play on stage at the biggest rock and heavy metal festival in the UK. Estrella won the public vote to play on the Doghouse Stage at the Download Festival in June which is expected to attract a crowd of around 90,000.
ART lovers have been flocking to see a new exhibition of work by Caithnessians of all ages involved in the local life drawing group. The exhibition called The Draawing Group, comprises a series of figurative drawings by the group which meets at Wick High School.
