I've got a bird in the garden that looks like a plump sparrow but its got a reddish-brown chest and a greeny-blue skull cap that runs down the back of it neck with a tufted crest....got any ideas...

Sounds like a bunting or a lark, but can't recall one with a greenish blue cap, I'll ned to google it

Was it a Redstart I wonder?

This one below is a Fieldfare which is an overwinter bird in the uk, you may have seen a straggler, although the far north you don't see them very often. Your description sounds more like fieldfare because the greeny blue goes on down to its tail but the wings are brown, their is a gingery tint to the breast. It would be a little bigger than a Sparrow though, not far off the size of a starling.

Your spot on ,thats the one .He been the the garden for a few weeks now ,hes a busy little thing ...Will he stay around or is he passing through ????

If its a Chaffinch he will be there for the summer.
