Social media where people are saying what they like
A SHERIFF expressed concern, today, about the increase in cases coming before him involving improper social media posts.
Sheriff Andrew Berry made the comment when sentencing 43-year-old Brian Kirk, who admitted making a comment of a sexual nature while exchanging Facebook messages with a teenager.
Sheriff Berry said that such cases he deals with were cropping up "more and more and more" involving social media where people were "behaving and saying as they please".
The court at Wick heard that the remark Kirk, of 27 Harland Road, Castletown , made to the 16-year-old girl, on September 27, was "grossly offensive".
The sheriff, who saw a background report, told Kirk that he didn't think the accused had grasped the seriousness of the offence, and warned him that any repetition of his behaviour would inevitably attract a prison sentence.
Kirk was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work in the community.
