Rothes 1 V Wick 1 - report from www.highlandleague.net

1-1. Goals and points 07-May-2005

The sun hasn't shined on Rothes very often this season and today they experienced all four seasons within the first half as the sun was replaced by a freak hail storm at one stage in the first half.

The action was not as sharp with the only real opening of the first half an hour being created by the visitors. David Cowie showed Kevin Shortreed a clean pair of heels as he raced to the bye-line before cutting it back for Nigel Mackenzie but from 6 yards out the Wick striker fired wide of the target.

Brian Thomson may not be quite as quick as he was a few years ago but his enthusiasm and striking prowess have not diminished and he showed just how hard his shot can be when he crashed a 25 yarder off Don MacMillan's crossbar in the 34th minute.

Rothes took the lead eight minutes before the break and for the second goal in a row it was one of the coaching staff who applied the finishing touch. A short corner was rolled out to Duncan Goodall who sent the ball into the Wick box where Brian Thomson headed home from six yards.

The fans had to wait almost twenty minutes for the first chance of note in the second half. Nigel Mackenzie capitalised on slight confusion in the home defence following a fortunate ricochet but his effort went tamely into former team mate Darren Strong's arms when it should have been bulging the back of the net.

Wick pulled things level with sixteen minute remaining thanks to a thunderous Martin Gunn strike. From all of 35 yards he rocketed the ball beyond Darren Strong who had no chance.
