THE financial problems at Wick High School were known by Highland Council over a year ago but were "swept under the carpet". That is the claim made by Iain Baikie chairman of the school parent council, who has accused some education and administrative officials of "moral bankruptcy".

A SHALE gas company based in London has no plans to start fracking in Caithness. That was said this week by IGas Energy, the company which acquired the Lybster field when it bought Caithness OIl in 2013. The purchase gave it a Petroleum Exploration and Development Licence which allows the company to explore 160 square kilometres of the Caithness and Sutherland coast.

THE failure by BT to repair phone lines in the far north after storms over two months ago, has been branded scandalous by local MP John Thurso. He said it is "utterly unacceptable" to deprive people of their phones for weeks at a time, and claimed BT's reponse looks "amateurish and unprepared" compare to other utilities which reacted rapidly. BT yesterday hit back, claimed the weather ocnditions were "unprecedented" and added that engineers "worked tirelessly" to restore services as quickly as possible".

ANGRY parents have hit out at the "unsatisfactory" bus service provided by Stagecoach for Wick High School pupils. They accused the bus company of providing a poor service for their children after experiencing problems for some time. But the company insisted it is "taking action to address the situation".

A CAITHNESS couple had a memorable debut at the Snowman Rally. Sandy and Sandra Coghill from Bower, came away with a trophy after picking up the Foss Award for the highest-placed Highland Car Club first-time entrants. They were delighted with their success as it was the first time Sandy had driven in the rally and first time Sandra had navigated.

THE family of a man, who helped promote sport among youngsters in Caithness, has paid tribute to his memory by giving his favourite football club more than £2,800 for its youth sport and physical activity programme. Garry Macleod, who worked as an active schools co-ordinator in Wick, passed away, when he suffered a heart attack at his home in January at the age of 38.

THURSO Live Music Association is preparing for a lot of tears but still a spectacular finale as its members say goodbye for the last time. The group, which is celebrating its 50th year, has decided to call it a day after failing to attract more younger members needed to carry on.
