Romanian was almost twice the new permitted level
A YOUNG Romanian has become the first driver in Caithness to fall foul of the new drinks-driving legislation.
Construction worker Ionut Ciubotariu, 21, was fined £330 and banned for a year after he pleaded guilty through an interpretor at Wick Sheriff Court, today.
Police stopped him at the The Shore Wick, in the early hours of February 7 and a roadside test proved positive. A further check revealed a breath-alcohol level of 40 microgrammes, almost twice the new limit of 22mgs.
The court heard that the ban could affect his job on the construction of the new High School in Wick.
First offender Ciubotariu of 8 Dancing Cairns Crescent, Aberdeen, was advised that he could reduce the driving ban by successfully completing the drinks-driver rehabilitation scheme.
