A BUSINESSMAN IS calling for CCTV cameras to be put up on street lamps in a Thurso estate after a second raid on his fish and chip shop left him an estimated £30,000 out of pocket. Mik McKinlay was left devastated earlier this month when thieves broke into his Ormlie Finest Plaice outlet, on Provost Sinclair Road. After stealing food and money, they went on to destroy his fryers and fridges which has put his business out of commission.
SCOTTISH health minister Shona Robson has told NHS Highland "every effort must be made" to ensure Caithness General Hospital meets the needs of the area "now and in the future". Ms Robson was responding to a plea from Thurso woman, Carol McKie, who launched an online petition when the health authority planned to cut 24-hour surgery at the Wick hospital.
PETER MATHESON chugged into John O' Groats at the weekend at the end of a remarkable 8000 mile odyssey which saw him venture into the Arctic Circle at the wheel of a vintage tractor. The former pollce officer averaged just 10mph on his 1972 Massey Fergusson and was hit by 14 punctures on his epic trek which began at Groats on a balmy day in August.
A BID is being made to recruit a Wick=based consultant surgeon at Caithness General Hospital but the successful applicant would be expected to undertake work across the Highlands. NHS HIghland this week confirmed it has advertised for a consultant surgeon for Raigmore Hospital in Invernesss. It is for a general surgeon with an interest in upper gastrointestinal and/or liver, pancreas and gall bladder surgery.
A POLISH government official has thanked people in north-east Caithness for their "kind words of sympathy and compassion" following the loss of the eight crew on the cargo carrier MV Cemfjord in the Pentland Firth.
DUNBEATH will soon find out if will be one of the areas chosen to receive 3G mobile coverage from Vodafone in a national rurual programme. The village is one of 100 rural communities across the UK that could benefit from the Vodafone Rural Open Sure Signal programme. If it is selected, the scheme could go live in the area by the end of the year.
MOURNERS gathered at Wick St Fergus Church, recently, to pay their last respects to the town's oldest citizen who passed away at Caithness General Hospital. Alice More was described as "a very special lady", "a cheery soul" and a mother and grandmother who enjoyed life and was devoted to her family.
