NHS Highland turned down an offer from a locum consultatnt surgeon at Caithness General to remain at the hospital if he was given a long-term contract. That is the claim made this week, in the wake of the decision by the health authority to stop 24-hour surgical provision at the Wick hospital. It did so after one consultant retired and another resigned leaving just one in post.

NEW Scottish health minister Shona Robison should press NHS Highland to restore 24-hour surgical cover at Caithness General Hospital, as soon as possible, according to a far north Highland councillor. Wick councillor Bill Fernie is worried about the NHS decision to suspend the round-the-clock- service at the hospital on Monday in the wake of a consultant surgeon retiring, and another resigning, leaving jsut one in post.

TOWN centre businesses in Wick have vented their fury at BT for chasing customers away during the busiest shopping week of the year, by digging up Bridge Street to lay fibre-optic cables for super fast broadband and upgrades. Business owners said the roadworks are costing them thousands of pounds with some reporting their takings are significantly down on what they usually take the week before Christmas.

A FOUR-YEAR old Caithness boy is recovering after a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Arran Macleod who has a rare genetic condition had the operation at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow. He had to undergo other treatments and a form of chemotherapy before the transplant could take place.

A DEVICE for horses which was invented by a Caithness woman could be a racing certainty to attract a global market. Horsecrocz - the brainchild of Liz Alexander - has been three-and-a-half years in the making but is already creating interest in the UK and elsewhere in the world.

THE number of motorists convicted for drink-driving in Caithness in 2014 is on course to be the lowest in five years. Up to the end of November, 16 motorists have been convicted at Wick Sheriff Court of being drunk behind the wheel and have been given driving bans.

A CRACK RIFLE SHOT, one of the north's leading rugby players and a bowling ace, are this year's Caithness sports stars. Sarah Henderson Stevie Campbell and Claire Madden were honoured on Tuesday evening at the annual awards ceremony hosted by Caithness Sports Council.
