NHS Highland is considering recruiting surgeons to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness and then sending them up to Caithness General Hospital. Health bosses yesterday said pooling surgeons in Inverness to provide cover in other hospitals seemed "a particularly attractive proposal" to solve a staffing crisis in Wick.

MORE than 100 teachers were absent from schools in the HIghlands due to stress last year, according to official figures. A freedom of information request has revealed that 118 teachers were off work in the region in 2013/14 against a backdrop of about 1900 teachers Scotland-wide - hundreds more than in 2009.
DEVELOPERS behind a controversial wind farm plan in central Caithness, which has been rejected twice in the last seven years, have appealed to the Scottish Government. Spittal Hill Windfarms Ltd has lodged the appeal against Highland Council's decision to reject the proposal to build seven turbines on ground east of Spittal Hill.
THE show will go on for primary school pupils after Christmas plays faced being axed over health and safety rules. Education official threatened to scrap the plays last week, due to fears over stages, scenery, costumes and props being fire hazards. But the council was forced to make a dramatic U-turn and apologise, after councillors described the safety regulations as going too far.
NO Caithness motorists were caught by police over the weekend following the introduction of new drink-driving limits. That was the message from local police chief Nick Clasper who said drivers were "well-behaved".
WIND farm-related matters were high on the agenda at the latest meeing of Bettyhill, Strathnaver and Alnaharra Community Council. Members were pleased to learn a Bettyhill Renewables Community Fund has been set up and in addition to the £6095 already received from Bettyhill Wind Farm, a further £3000 has come in from Scottish and Southern Energy's Strathy North Community Fund.
